I have worked with a lot of people over the years, and I believe that most people want to make a difference. Those that don’t have often become jaded and disillusioned with their boss, the workplace culture or office politics.
In a way, we have to work at keeping our workplace culture alive and thriving, just as we have to keep putting energy into our marriages, families and friendships.
In our day and age, it’s just not enough to bring home a paycheck and call it a day. Indeed, we might say there is a revival in terms of finding meaning at work.
As much as I hear people complain about “Millenials” in the workplace, one thing that I know about the youngest generation in the workplace is that they want more. They want more meaning, more input, more job satisfaction and they want to use their skills to contribute.
Workplaces have a growing pressure to create an environment where people can contribute their best. Following are three tips to create a culture that fosters the quest for meaning.

1. Create an environment that fosters innovation
People need a place to bring their ideas and have them heard and valued. Years ago I started my own company because the company I was consulting for did not have room for others’ ideas and innovations.
If you are going to cultivate innovation, it has to be safe to “fail”. How can you encourage people to take risks? What forum do you have for people to share innovative business solutions?

2. Make sure your leaders have coaching skills
There is a difference between leading, managing and coaching. Coaching assumes that the employee is competent and can come up with their own solutions when given thought provoking questions.
Coaching is based on creating a vision for the future, and supporting the employee to live into that vision through working towards concrete goals.

3. Value and support employee development
One of the main complaints I hear from employees is that there are not enough opportunities for ongoing growth and development.
In large companies, there may be a clear path towards growth and promotion. In medium and smaller companies there may not be as much opportunity for formal promotion. In this case, employees still need ongoing professional development to feel valued and grow their skills.
